Specialty Fish and Flower Cake

I was approached by friends of ours to create a special cake for their father’s and grandfather’s birthday. They wanted to incorporate two of his passions into the design: salmon fishing and his flower garden.

So I created this in light-blue fondant covered cake with a salmon and flowers on top. The fish is carved from cake, covered in fondant, and painted. The roses, daisies, and carnations are made from gum paste and brushed with pearl dust.

The grass border is piped with green butter cream. Flavors included marble cake with mocha butter cream.

Specialty Valentine’s Day Cakes

Valentine’s Day was over a week ago and it was a busy time. So busy that only now I find time to post what I created for that special occasion.

This Specialty Heart and Roses Cake was ordered by a returning customer from Germany. It was delivered to her Mom here in Kelowna as a Valentine’s present for family here.

It is a red velvet cake baked in a heart-shaped pan
with raspberry cream cheese icing covered in red fondant. Along the sides there is a red scroll pattern piped with royal icing.

The top is decorated with white whimsical fondant roses.

For friends and coworkers I baked these cupcakes and decorated them, fitting for the “heartiest” of all days, with heart-shaped candy and also heart-shaped glitter sprinkles.

Flavors included hazelnut double chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and raspberry cream cheese icing and red velvet with raspberry cream cheese icing.

And finally for my husband I created this hazelnut chocolate cake with with chocolate buttercream.

It is covered in white fondant with two red fondant hearts and heart-shaped glitter sprinkles on top. The hearts were brushed with ivory pearl dust.

On the sides there are heart shaped candies attached and the border is made from candy as well.

Below you can watch a little video I made about my Valentine’s Day baking.

My Bride-Made Wedding Cake – UPDATE

I told you about my wedding cake already here and now I finally get to update you with some pictures from the photographer. She did a wonderful job capturing our happy, beautiful, unforgettable day.

Allow me to take this chance to tell you a little bit about the making of this cake. With the help of my friend I was able to fulfill my dream of creating my own wedding cake.

She was there with me going through all the unexpected hurdles, that included a chocolate cake not wanting to rise and last minutes stops at the store.

Finally, we had all for cakes filled, iced and covered in fondant. Now it was time for set-up at the reception place. While we were figuring out how to place the wine glasses to support glass cake boards we left my friend’s little 2 1/2 year-old son unattended for a moment.

And the cake-lover that he his, he took his chance and poked three of his little fingers into the side of one of the cakes. We noticed before he could pull off a piece of the cake. But some damage was done.

I didn’t have any fondant with me to re-cover the cake. And I was so exhausted by that time that I also didn’t feel like re-doing it at home. So we tried closing the holes has well as we could and changed the design.

Instead of having the big blue flowers centered on each tier, we put them on the side and turned the “holey” side facing the back wall. No one could see anymore what had happened and I actually like the new set-up.

Everything turned out well and I have a story to tell about my wedding cake for the rest of my life and maybe even at this little boys wedding some day ;)
