Custom-designed theme cakes are probably more popular now than ever before. TV shows like “Cake Boss” or “Ace of Cakes” are most likely one of the reason why.
One popular theme – and often returning request – are Poker Cakes. They are the perfect birthday cake for passionate card players and are a nice touch to poker and casino themed parties or events.
There are many different ways to incorporate this design into a cake. Whether you play Texas Holdem or any other poker variant, in my opinion, one or more of the following core elements has to be included into the design: the color green, playing cards (or suites) and poker chips.
Here are a few examples of poker cakes I have created. The first is a more general casino theme cake. It is iced in poker table green fondant with symbols of the four playing card suite all over. The recipient was celebrating their 21st birthday with a trip to Las Vegas. A casino-style cake was very fitting for the occasion.
The next cake is a tiered version with the green icing returning on one tier. There are also poker chips flowing around all over this cake together with a hand of playing cards (hearts Royal Flush). The birthday message is included on the big blind.
The last cake makes you think you are sitting at an actual poker table. It is covered in elegant black fondant icing, but also has elements in poker green. Other decorative items (all made from sugar paste) include poker chips, a card deck and intricately hand-painted playing cards.
