First Birthday Turtle Cake

This Specialty Turtle Cake was created for a little boy’s first birthday. His mother contacted me with a picture of a turtle cake and this one was created accordingly.

The turtle sits on an 8″ round cake covered in light blue fondant. The cake side is decorated with fondant and butter cream grass and a colourful bead border. Furthermore a big “1” and the birthday boy’s name decorates the side.

All parts of the turtle, body, head, and feet, are fondant covered cake as well. The turtle’s party head and his little caterpillar friend are from fondant.

The flavours included vanilla white cake with raspberry filling and vanilla butter cream.

Notes:
  • To achieve the sphere shape of the turtle’s shell I baked it in the Wilton Sport’s Ball Pan.
  • For the legs and head the Mini Ball Pan was very handy, but carving some cupcakes will work too.
  • I used these alphabet cookie cutters to cut out the letters for the name from fondant.
  • For the grass pipings I used a multi-openings tip.
  • The caterpillars antennas are inedible. I just used some flower stamens.

  2. I would like to make this cake but want some suggestion on how to make the feet and head. Are they cupcakes covered with fondant? Did you secure them with toothpicks? Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks jan

    • Hi Jan,
      You are totally right. I carved cupcakes to size for the feet and head, iced in buttercream and covered in fondant. Later I got this small half ball pan which would probably have worked even better than cupcakes.
      The feet I attached with just a little bit of royal icing, but for the head I indeed just toothpicks to attach it. I hope this helps.

    • Hey Jan,
      the antennas are actually not edible. I just used stamens for gum paste flower making.
      Good luck for your project this weekend. Don’t forget to have fun with it 🙂 And if you feel like it, I would love it if you want to share your cake.

  4. I have the base made and covered with fondant. I used a 10 inch square base and made fondant with white choc and marshmallow. It tastes better than the kind you buy in the store but it is awful to work with. I will cover the shell, head and feet tomorrow, along with all the embelishments. I am using a different color scheme. I am hoping for it to look good enough I am not embarrassed.
